Artificial intelligence is transforming the economics of scams. Criminals can now generate convincing voices, videos, identities and personalised attacks at unprecedented speed and scale. As the cost of manufacturing convincing deception reduces, the cues we use to distinguish the genuine from the fraudulent are becoming less reliable. What, then, can we trust in the age of AI?

This is driving a broader rethink of the trust architecture of digital interactions: how legitimate people, organisations, communications and transactions can be distinguished from fraudulent ones, and how scams can be detected and disrupted before harm occurs. AI-powered detection, stronger signals of authenticity and faster sharing of risk signals all offer possibilities – but also raise important questions around responsibility, privacy and access.

This panel will examine how governments and industry can build a more scam-resistant digital ecosystem in the age of AI: shifting the burden away from individual vigilance, moving intervention further upstream, and identifying where greater cooperation is needed.
