Biography

The Honourable Gary Anandasangaree is Canada’s Minister of Public Safety. Elected to Parliament in 2015, Minister Anandasangaree was first appointed to Cabinet as the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations in 2023. He has also served as the Minister of Northern Affairs and the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada. In May of 2025, he was named Minister of Public Safety.

Minister Anandasangaree came to Canada as a refugee with his mother in 1983. Grateful for the opportunities this country has provided him and his family, he has used his life’s experience to advocate for the rights of refugees in Canada. Prior to entering politics, Minister Anandasangaree was an internationally recognized human rights lawyer, regularly representing Lawyers’ Rights Watch Canada at the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Minister Anandasangaree earned his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2006. He went on to manage his own law firm in Scarborough and became a well-known community leader and activist. 

In honour of his local advocacy, Minister Anandasangaree was awarded both the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Minister Anandasangaree is married and has two daughters.
